Shah Latif’s Ideal
Human: An Intellectual Study
Abstract
Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai is widely recognized as a poet of
love, spirituality, humanism, and cultural consciousness. While considerable
scholarly attention has been devoted to the mystical, social, and literary
dimensions of his poetry, the concept of the “Ideal Human” embedded within his
poetic vision has not been examined comprehensively as an independent
intellectual construct. This paper argues that Shah Latif’s poetry presents a
coherent and multifaceted conception of the ideal human being, which gradually
unfolds throughout the Shah Jo Risalo, from Sur Kalyan to Sur
Bilawal.
Drawing upon a close textual and interpretive reading of
selected verses from various surs, this study explores how Shah Latif
constructs his ideal human through diverse poetic forms, symbolic
representations, occupational figures, and legendary characters such as Marui,
Sasui, Sohni, and others. The study demonstrates that Latif’s ideal human
transcends distinctions of gender, class, ethnicity, and religious identity,
embodying universal values such as love, moral courage, and resistance against
oppression, self-awareness, sacrifice, truthfulness, compassion, and unwavering
commitment to human dignity.
The paper further examines this concept in relation to other
influential notions of the perfect or superior human found in world thought,
including Nietzsche’s Superman, Bergson’s ideal man, and Iqbal’s Mard-e-Momin.
It argues that Shah Latif’s conception is broader in its humanistic scope and
more deeply rooted in ethical and spiritual universality. Ultimately, the study
concludes that the idea of the ideal human constitutes one of the central
philosophical foundations of Shah Latif’s poetry and offers a timeless model
for personal, social, and moral transformation.
